In its current form, Coinbase holds the crypto and pays you out on its own terms, in the countries it serves.
Coinbase Commerce made crypto checkout simple for years, and then it began to wind down. If you are here, you probably need a new home for crypto on your site, one that still asks nothing of you to run. Here is the honest version of what moving to us changes.
Coinbase Commerce gave you a hosted crypto checkout carrying a name buyers already knew. You created a charge, the buyer paid in crypto, and you ran nothing yourself. That was a real service, and it is the part you now have to replace somewhere else.
Coinbase Commerce stopped taking new merchants and is winding down. Its replacement serves businesses in a short list of countries and holds the funds on your behalf, so the coins sit with a custodian until they decide to release them. If you sell from outside that list, or you want the coins landing somewhere you control, you need a new home for your button.
You still take crypto from a normal web page with no server to run. You still paste a button and let the checkout do the work. What changes is where the money lands and who is allowed to use it.
In its current form, Coinbase holds the crypto and pays you out on its own terms, in the countries it serves.
NOWPayments runs a hosted crypto checkout and settles to the wallet you set, with Monero, bitcoin, and most major coins behind the buy button.
Or go non-custodial: MakePay and self-hosted Monero settle straight to a wallet you own, with no company in the middle at all.
Coinbase Commerce is winding down on its own schedule, so move before it stops settling. Export any records you need from its dashboard first, because our log starts with your first sale through us.
If you are a business it still serves and you are content for Coinbase to hold the funds, their own successor is the official path forward, and we are not a custodian. Just know you are choosing that, because a custodian can hold, review, or freeze what it is holding, and this one already stopped serving a lot of people who were counting on it.
